  • Summary
    • A medium size public OEM custom computer electronics manufacturer was experiencing long product development cycles and risking loss of business.
  • Challenges
    • Product release was delayed due to "surprise" failures late in the design verification process, requiring costly redesign, requalification, and sometimes delay in customer end-product launch.
  • Results
    • A study was implemented to determine issues (weaknesses) common to most or all designs.
    • Reviewed and strengthened design stress analysis in problem areas.
    • Created a process where historical problem types were screened in early prototype "mini-qual" testing, i.e. testing only those major "suspect" problem areas rather than doing complete qualifications.
    • Subsequent production qualification tests passed without failures on the majority of products, and design cycle times and design costs were reduced significantly.
